The Split 9-Patch Quilting Block

the split 9 patch quilting block

The Split 9-patch quilting block is a block that is split in half diagonally with value. This patch is often compared to the log cabin quilt block, as you can arrange the block in similar ways.

split 9 patch grid linesThe Split 9-patch is an easy, frugal quilting block to make. As you can see from the grids in the picture to the left, there  are only 6 squares, and 3 half square triangles in this block.

This is a block that should be made scrappy, so you can see the different squares.  If you don't make it scrappy, it is just like a half square triangle. That can easily be made another way.

I used simple measurements making this block.  Each grid finishes  at 2 inches.  The block is 6 1/2 inch raw.

Make your half square triangles a nd squares, and then sew them together as shown.  Follow good piecing and pressing rules.

It is difficult to get confused on this block, so it makes a good first quilt.

There are many ways to arrange these blocks. Have some fun with them.
