The Rail Fence Quilting Block
The Rail Fence Quilting block is one of the easiest quilting blocks to construct. It can be very frugal, as you can make it out of scraps of fabric.
The traditional way to make this block is to cut strips of fabric the same width, sew them together, and then cut them into squares.
Then the quilt blocks are put together, usually alternating the direction.
You usually don't even have to worry about the seams with this block, as you attach the side with the seams to the side without seams.
As with all very easy blocks, you can be very creative in how you lay them out, or by adding additional blocks.
Below are a couple of layouts for this block. The first one is a very traditional layout of a 3 strip rail fence. The second one is again done with a traditional layout, but it has 5 strips, and is done in reproduction type prints. As you can see, the look is very different with just minor changes.
If you are a beginner, the Rail Fence makes a wonderful first quilt.
