The Magnolia Quilting Block

picture of the magnolia quiltig block

The Magnolia Quilting Block is a fairly easy block to make.  It is a 9-patch, made of squares and half square triangles, with one of the patches divided into a 4 patch.

It is a beautiful flower block, with a very delicate look.

Put the patches together, per the picture.  Make sure that the bottom right square in the 4 patch  is the same color as magnolia flower, or if you use different colors for the flower, be sure that it blends and you can tell it is part of the flower.

If you use simple measurements, (2 1/2 raw or 3 1/2 raw for the squares),  your block will be either 6 or 9 inches finished.

One reason I didn't put this block in the Basic Quilting Blocks is that it is not used as frequently as some of the other classic quilting blocks.  You don't see many quilts made with nothing but this block.  It tends to be used more in sampler quilts or as an accent block.

Have some fun with this one.  It is great for small delicate projects, like tablerunners. Here is another rendering of this block.
